SATURDAY JULY 17, 2004 - SHALER 10, MOON TOWNSHIP 5 - LOSS - PLAYOFFS - AWAY - (0-1, 13-14)

It was a dark, wet, and dreary day in Moon Twp and in Shaler. After about an hour rain delay, the grounds crew pulled the tarp off Matulevic Field and the ump yelled play ball. For Moon it might've been better if they let the tarp on as they lost to top ranked Shaler in a steady drizzle. Shaler jumped on starter Adrian Sykes for an a five run lead after four innings. Moon started a comeback in the top of the fifth inning with two runs. The bottom of the fifth turned into a nightmare for Moon as Shaler put five more runs on the scoreboard when several erors and a wet ball proved fatal. Matt Mays had three hits (DOUB) and Billy Divis added two hit.

MOON TWP. - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 2 - 2 - 1 = 5 - 8 - 2

OTHER GAME and TOURNAMENT NOTES :

No score was reported at this posting of the other game at Matulevic Field between West Mifflin and Washington at 3:30 PM. Shaler would meet the winner of this game at Shaler at 3:30 PM on Sunday. Moon will tenatively meet the loser of this game at 12 Noon at Shaler also on Sunday. I will have more information to pass on to you later in the morning. Keep the faith guys, don't quit. Good Luck GUYS !!! You can do it !!!

DIRECTIONS TO MATULEVIC FIELD FROM MOON TWP. :

It's is a tough place to find.

Follow directions if you were going to Ross Park Mall.

Follow McKnight Road (Rt 19 South) past Ross Park Mall till you reach Siebert Road (Post Office on Right).

Turn LEFT on Siebert Road

Turn RIGHT on Thompson Run Road

Turn LEFT on Vilsack Road

Turn Right on Anderson Road

Travel approximately 1 1/2 miles on Anderson Road. Matulevic Field is on left side along Anderson Road. Parking could be a problem if a large crowd is in attendance

Give yourself about 45 minutes to an hour. Shopping traffic is heavy on Saturdays. There are really no service stations or convienince stores after turning off McKnight(mare) Road. So make sure you have gas and snacks and directions before making that left onto Siebert. The field does have rest rooms and a concession stand and I do believe it should be open.

In memory : My condolences and sympathy to Marty and Patty Kokel and their family on the passing of their daughter, Christina. I first met the Kokels in 1984 through my involvements in the Moon Crescent Lassie League. Christine was this beautiful little blonde girl that was just starting to play softball. Her parents were hard working volunteers in the league. I was watched Christine grow up. She was a sweet and lovable girl who as the years progressed also volunteered her time to the softball and now that her father and brother, Marty Jr. were involved in the Moon Township Baseball Association. She was helping there also. Time has sort of slipped away since then, it has been about five years since I last saw her. I will miss her smile and her willingness to help others. She was truly a sweet and blessed girt and is in our good Lord's hands now. God Bless you Christina !!! God Bless your family in their time of mourning.

Hope you are feeling and getting better Mom, we want you back home !!!!

CONGRATULATIONS Ray Bosetti on 40 years of service and commitment to Moon Township Baseball. God Bless you my friend !!!!

Nicky Peterson and Jason Swalga had two (2) hits each. Paul Altmyer and Dave Cimato each knocked in two RBI's. Adrian's first shot was a 405 ft 3 run blast that gave Moon a 3-1 lead. Mike Burgunder pitched the first five innings. Ben Sorosky came in to pitch the last two and was a bit shaky to start, spotting Sto two runs and the lead in the sixth. However, Benny shut them down in the seventh including a game ending strikeout to win the contest. Tom DeAngelis had a beautiful bases loaded, one out, unassisted double

SATURDAY JULY 11, 2004 - MOON TOWNSHIP 7, KEYSTONE OAKS ASSOC. 2 - WIN - LEAGUE - AWAY - (10-7, 10-12)

The Moon Township American Legion has had it's ups and downs this season. Much like a roller coaster with it's dips and peaks. On Saturday at Duquense University Field in Greentree, Moon was hoping they could get one more big peak before the ride ends. With the 7-2 win over KOA they kept it going. Some outstanding defensive plays and strong pitching were the key in this essential ORL win. Adrian Sykes went the distance on the mound striking out six batters and scattering 5 hits. A spectacular catch down the right field line in the third inning by Mike Burgunder quieted KOA for the rest of the game. At the plate, Burgunder and team mate Billy Divis (2 DOUB) carried the offensive load with 3 hits and scoring a pair of runs a piece. It was Divis's two run double in fifth inning that put the game on ice. Tom DeAngelis also added a double to deep RCF.

With Sykes complete game performance, it allowed Mgr. Mark Thompson to give Mike Burgunder, Ben Sorosky, and Paul Altmyer one more day's reat for today's big ORL doubleheader. Moon starts the late day on the road DH at Sto-Rox at 4 PM and moves a few miles away to Robinson Twp. for the 8 PM nitecap. Good luck guys !!!!

FRIDAY JULY 9, 2004 - ELLIOTT 5, MOON TOWNSHIP 0 - LOSS - AWAY - LEAGUE - (9-7, 9-12)

Monn's playoff hopes hit a pothole on Stueben Street in Crafton Heights Friday night. The pothole came in the form of a big loss to Elliott, 5-0. Moon's bats couldn't come up with the big hit as they stranded 11 base runners. Dave Cimato pitched a good game but Elliott made the most of thier eight hits. Billy Divis had two hits. Eric Hamilton was on base three times including a pair of walks and a single. Casey Williams and Adrian Sykes each had doubles in the loss. Moon needs to pick up the pace and some wins or the summer will end sooner than they want. Good luck today guys against KOA.

MONDAY JULY 5, 2004 - STO-ROX 3, MOON TOWNSHIP 0 - LOSS - LEAGUE - HOME - (8-6, 8-11)

Moon Township returned from just recieving a well deserved break. Having the 4th of July weekend off. However, apparently some of the rest of the team decided to take some extra time off. At game time, Moon only had eight players. In American Legion rules you have THIRTY (30) minutes to have enough players to play the game. At 6:21, Moon had it's nine players. Billy Divis pitched 5 solid innings. But Moon's offense only managed three hits.

Ben Sorosky pitched well for 8 1/3 innings but ran out of gas, allowing Sto-Rox to score 4 runs in the ninth inning. Moon hitters had trouble early adjusting to SR pitching. But Moon bats came alive in the 6th and 7th inning to come from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game and send this one in to extra innings. Brian Schmidt singled to start the 7th, Eric Hamilton followed with a double and boths scored on a combination of walks and errors. Hamilton had two doubles in the game. Moon had a picnic in Wellsburg, West Virginia on Sunday afternoon following their last game in the tournament versus Mill Creek, PA. But without any pitchers left to throw it was no picnic during the game as they got beat 20-10.

SUNDAY JUNE 27, 2004 - MILL CREEK 20, MOON TOWNSHIP 10 - LOSS - TOURNEY - AWAY - (7-7, 7-9)

After playing four outstanding games in this tournament, the Moon pitching staff which was completely exhausted and depleted by injury was given the day off. Thus the loss and the score, 20-10. All the Moon non-pitching position players were given a chance to pitch which needless to say led to the lopsided loss. We will not list the pitching stats from this game due to the fact no Moon pitcher pitched in it.

However, on a bright note the Moon offense did make some noise. Nick Peterson continued his hot pace at the plate with another 3 hit performance which included a triple. Jason Swalga also continued to pound the ball he had a pair of hits including a 3-run homer to deep right center field. Brian Schmidt also had three hits. Mike Burgunder added a pair. Ben Sorosky, Adrian Sykes, and Billy Divis all had a hit. Eric Hamilton had two walks to set the tourney record with seven walks.

MOON TOWNSHIP - 4 - 0 - 1 - 3 - 2 = 10 - 13 - 3

MILL CREEK - 1 - 2 - 5 - 1 - 11 = 20 - 14 - 2

Tournament and general notes : Moon had a picnic after after the game. .... Ironically, Moon won all 5 cointosses during the tourney. Moon was to return to ORL action on Monday night with a game with West View - Ross at home at 6:00 PM. Good luck guys

SATURDAY JUNE 26, 2004 - ELKINS, WV. 6, MOON TOWNSHIP 5 - LOSS - TOURNEY - HOME - (7-4 ; 7-7)

The Moon Legion continues to play great baseball against some of the better legion programs in west Virginia but can't seem to bring a win back from accross the state lines. They have won every coin toss here but fail to find a key hit or make the big play to nail down a win.

Jeremy Barchie started for Moon and went three innings before seeking relief. Ben Sorosky finished the game and took the loss. Moon's offense continued to struggle, but not Nicky Peterson. He continued his torrid pace with 3 of the seven Moon hits including a double. Duane Compo (2B) and Jason Swalga each added a pair.

Moon attempted a comeback in the seventh inning but a controversial call on a "hidden ball trick" hampered it. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Nicky Peterson singled, Jason Swalga then also singled. Peterson slid safe into 2nd base, but injured his knee. Peterson signalled for time and was checking his knee while still on the bag. When the Moon coaches started onto the field to check him. He stepped off the bag and was immediately tagged by the secondbaseman. The umpire called him out.The ump claims he didn't give any one timeout. Therefore Peterson became the second out. Duane Compo then hit the next pitch for a double and Swalga scored. Compo reached third on the errant throw home. Paul Altmyer then hit shot to the fence for the final. The tying run was left stranded at third.

SATURDAY JUNE 26, 2004 - WHEELING, WV 9, MOON TOWNSHIP 8 - LOSS - TOURNEY - HOME - (7-4 ; 7-8)

Wheeling who jumped on host Wellsburg on Friday night for eight runs in the first inning continued to use that approach with Moon. Post 1 used a pair of walks to start the game then a pair of home runs to take a quick 4-0 lead. Adrian Sykes answered the call in the bottom of the first, when after singles by Jason Swalga and Duane Compo, he launched a three run blast to center to make it 4-3. Adrian Sykes pitched 6 2/3 innings in relief but took the loss as Wheeling put together three hits for two runs in the seventh inning for a come from behind victory. Offensively Moon had 11 hits, Jason Swalga led the team with three hits including a double. Nicky Peterson continued his torrid hitting pace with another pair of hits. Duane Compo and Adrian Sykes also added two hits each. Paul Altmyer made some outstanding defensive plays in right field.
