The Official 2005 Moon Township.(PA) American Legion Baseball Update.

OLD ALLEGHENY 11, MOON TOWNSHIP 2 - LOSS - LEAGUE - HOME - Thursday July 14 - (10-12, 10-13)

It would be a shame to see the current Moon Area H.S. Baseball Field go out on a negative note. The Moon Township American Legion baseball team finished its season on down note with an 11-2 loss at home. The field is to be the future home of the currently controversial new Moon Area Senior High School. So when Ben Sorosky made the final out last night, he became the last batter to hit on that field.

As for the game, unlike the team that has had the pitching going for it over the past two weeks, Moon had to use four pitchers in the drubbing. Old Allegheny tagged the collective mound work for 11 runs on 12 hits. Ben Smith would suffer the loss for Moon Township (10-12). Matt Meeder picked up the win. Moon finished tied for fifth place with North Allegheny in the ORL.

MOON TOWNSHIP 2, CRAFTON-INGRAM-THORNBURG 0 - WIN - LEAGUE - AWAY - Wednesday July 13 - (9-10, 9-11)

Moon pitching continues to be a strong presence in the ORL even as the season winds down to its conclusion. Eric Chimenti went 6 1/3 innings tonight to get the win and record Moon's first shutout of the season. He allowed only three hits. He did have some adventures though, but his defense held strong. In the C.I.T. fourth, Tom DeAngelis' 4U-3 double play snuffed a bases loaded threat. DeAngelis knocked down a sharply hit ball up the middle and stepped on second then fired a shot to first to complete In the sixth, C.I.T. had two men on with only one out. He struck out the No.5 man Chimenti. In the sixth, C.I.T. got the first two men on before he K'ed the No.5 man. He then got a popfly to leftfield where Ben Smith caught the fly and fired a bullett to third to double up the advancing runner.

In the top of the seventh, C.I.T. managed to get runners on first and third with only one out. Manager Dave Barchie went to his bullpen and brought in Ben Sorosky. Catcher Spencer Seigle gunned out the C.I.T. runner trying to steal second to get the tying run in scoring position. Sorosky then walked the leadoff man in a long at-bat to put the tying run back on-base. Sorosky then struckout the No.2 man to end the game.

Offensively, Chimenti also did well at the plate with two of Moon's six hits. Ben Smith also got two hits.

MOON TOWNSHIP 2 WEST ALLEGHENY 1 (8 INNINGS) - WIN - LEAGUE - HOME - Monday July 11 - (9-11, 9-12)

Moon Township got its fifth straight good pitching performance in a row tonight as they pulled out an extra inning win over West Allegheny, 2-1. Luke Brocks pitched a masterful eight innings and allowed only four hits. In the Moon eighth, Tommy DeAngelis led off it off with a single. Manager Dave Barchie then elected to pinch hit Brocks with Mike Burgunder. Burgunder who has not had an at-bat in almost 12 games singled on the first pitch. With runners on second and third with no outs, Kenny Sofranko, who has had a hot bat recently, singled home DeAngelis with the game winner. Sofranko had two hits, a sacrifice, 2 RBI's, and six putouts defensively.

Over the last five games, Moon has had 33 hits, but has only managed 6 runs. Tonight, the two runs were just enough.

The Moon Township American Legion team got another good pitching performance. This time from Paul Altmyer. Altmyer allowed only two earned runs. However, Moon bats continued to have thier problem, tonight, they just couldn't find the timely hits. Moon left 13 runners on-base and also thier 2005 playoff dreams. Moon and North Allegheny were officially eliminated from the Ohio River League playoffs with this loss. Elliott, Sto-Rox, West Allegheny, and Robinson Township have locked up all four spots.

Kenny Sofranko had an outstanding game for Moon with three hits and six putouts in centerfield. Eric Chimenti (DOUB) and Luke Brocks each added a pair of hits. John Herman almost did it all for Robinson Township. He pitched seven innings to get the win, had three hits including a home run.

CRAFTON-INGRAM-THORNBURG 5, MOON TOWNSHIP 2 - LOSS - LEAGUE - AWAY - Saturday July 9 - (8-10, 8-11)

Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z !!! Moon Township continues to sleep walk through the second half of thier ORL schedule as they dropped a 5-2 decision to last place C.I.T.. With the heart of thier batting order lost to injuries, vacations and a summer job, Moon continues to struggle to generate enough runs to win a game. Jeremy Barchie, who went the distance, pitched out of a jam in the sixth, but could not muster enough to hold C.I.T. back in the top of the seventh. Barchie struck out six and allowed only five hits. C.I.T. squeaked out three runs and never looked back as Moon lost it's third game in a row. Drew Kury, from C.I.T., held Moon hitless over the last three innings

Ben Smith and Ryan Butschle each had two hits including a double. Charlie Degnel had two hits for C.I.T.

WEST ALLEGHENY 2, MOON TOWNSHIP 0 - LOSS - LEAGUE - HOME - Friday July 8 - (8-9, 8-10)

For the second night in a row, Moon Township's offense has been reported MIA. Last night, West Allegheny's Don Pugliese struck out ten and limited Moon to four hits. The loss puts Moon (8-9) in a very precarious situation late in the season of possibly being eliminated from the Allegheny County Playoffs. Meanwhile, West Allegheny (10-7) inmproved thier grip on third place in the Ohio River League. WA's Jim Madalinsky had two hits. Greg Marshall and Bobby Benard each added RBI singles. Andrew Slifko turned in three defensive gems at thirdbase for West A.

Ben Sorosky, pitching one his best games of the season so far, took the loss and going the distance. Ben Smith had two of the four Moon hits. Brandon Eberle had a double. Moon travels to Crafton Athletic Field tonight at 6 PM.

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP 3, MOON TOWNSHIP 1 - LOSS - LEAGUE - HOME - Thursday July 7 - (8-8, 8-9)

Pitching duels are always fun to watch, not much action. Sort of like watching paint dry. Last night, Moon's offense sort of looked boring as Dan Vietmeier nuetralized thier bats and put a serious damper on thier playoff hopes as well as Robinson Township (8-7) beat Moon, 3-1 at home. The recent Montour graduate held Moon (8-8) to three hits, all singles, while striking out five. Meanwhile, the only bright spot for our boys was the wasted pitching performance by Sean Holliday. Holliday K'ed ten but walked five.

Paul Altmyer pitched a complete game, sczttering seven hits as Moon Township rebounded after Manager Dave Barchie's wake up call, 7-2 over Keystone Oaks. "The Moon defense was nothing short of spectacular" said Moon Asst. Coach Frank Sorosky. The Moon infield turned two inning ending double plays that took care of two major scoring threats by KOA. A 5-3-6 double squelched a first inning threat (Barchie to Holliday to DeAngelis covering third base. In the fifth, a 6-3-5 double play stopped the other(DeAngelis to Holliday to Barchie). Secondbaseman Ryan Butschle made a sensational ALL-STAR catch over his back in deep right-center field.

Offensively, Tommy DeAngelis sparked Moon's six-run rally in the sixth inning with an RBI double. Both DeAngelis (2 DOUB) and Butschle (DOUB) had two hits. Moon had nine hits.

MOON TOWNSHIP 12, STO-ROX 9. - WIN - LEAGUE - HOME - Monday June 27 - (6-5, 6-6)

Moon Township looks to have recovered from it's early season funk at the boys rocked and rolled first place Sto-Rox, 12-9 at home. Paul Altmyer started and want six innings to get the win over his mound opponent Mike Reilly. Moon jumped on Reilly quickly scoring three in the first, four in the second and three more in the third before he got pulled. Moon offense racked up 15 hits. Got to see a rare occurance also, with bases loaded and no outs. The leftfielder from Sto-Rox decided to catch a foul ball deep in foul ball territory. While the catch was outstanding, it allowed Moon runners to tag up and score a pair of runs. I will have more details on this game later.

However, I will say I enjoyed the game being in real attendance is so much more enjoyable than getting results on the phone. Also in attendance was Pirate minor league prospect, Brian Holliday. Holliday was home on an all-star break from his Lynchburg Hillcats. Lynchburg is the Pirate's High "A" farm club in the Carolina League.

WEST VIEW/ROSS 7, MOON TOWNSHIP 5 - LOSS - LEAGUE - HOME - Thursday June 23 - (1-4, 1-5)

Moon literally let one drop tonight at home as they lost a tough ORL game to West View/Ross, 7-5. Ben Smith became the hard luck pitcher tonight. In the fourth inning, a dropped foul ball with bases loaded and two outs, would allow Dante Vaccaro another chance to swing. Vaccaro doubled home three runs. Vaccaro would be the big man at the plate for WVR as he had four hits.

Moon Township (1-4, 1-5), managed a short-lived lead in the first inning at 2-1. But that was the only lead they would see. Brandon Eberle, who has been swinging the hot stick for Moon, and Jeremy Barchie (DOUB) each had two hits. Mike Burgunder also added a double.

Sean Holliday (1-1) picks up his first win of the season with 10 strikeouts, five hits, and the complete game.

The game was rather close most of the way. Moon carried only a 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning. Moon would score six runs ine seventh to put the game away. WVR's Lee Grandovic pitched a great game as well until the seventh. Moon bats pounded out 11 hits. Spencer Seigle led the way with two hits including a double. Elliott's David Powell brought his "A" game to Moon Township last night. In doing so, he limited Moon's offense to only two hits and gave Elliott a 5-0 shutout win over winless Moon. Moon bats hit him hard but they were right at the Elliott defense. Moon's biggest threat came in the last of the seventh inning with one out and runners on first and second. But the shot up the middle was speared by Powell and turned in to a game ending double play. Sean Holliday had a double for Moon.

Moon continues it long ORL tour tonight when they travel to North Hills to meet West View/Ross at Herb Field for a 6 PM matchup. Moon is now 0-3 in the ORL and needs to right the ship soon in order to maintain a respectable pace with front running Sto-Rox.

Moon Township went to "WILD and WONDERFUL" West Virginia on Sunday afternoon to meet Wellsburg, WVa. Post 34. However the trip was fruitless as the boys dropped a 10-7 exhibition decision to fall to 0-3 overall. Moon found its glove and actually outhit Wellsburg, 15-8. However, Wellsburg's defense was outstanding and Moon's pitching was downright repressive. Moon pitching allowed seven walks and a hit by pitch.

Moon Township bats continues to roll. But never managed to put a big inning together. Brandon Eberle continues to stroke the ball with three hits including sizzling two single that drove in two runs to give Moon the lead in the fifth inning. However, the lead would evaporate and so would Moon's chances of winning thier first game of the season.

NOTES : Moon has Monday off and returns to ORL action against a very tough, Elliott at 6:00 PM at Moon Area Field. What was scheduled as a doubleheader, the Wellsburg game was changed to a nine inning game.

STO-ROX 7, MOON TOWNSHIP 4 - LOSS - LEAGUE - AWAY - Friday June 17 - (0-2)

Moon Township when making the translation between the H.S. season and the Legion season have apparently misplaced thie gloves. Last night travelled to SKR' Ewing Road Field to meet the Ohio River League's first place entry, Sto-Rox (8-1). Moon started thier ace during the H.S. season, Sean Holliday. Holliday would strike out seven and walk four in his first start of the summer. But, Moon apparently failed again to bring thier gloves again. Four more errors added to the six at Robinson on Wednesday night have left them 0-2 in the Ohio River League.

Moon managed to out hit Sto-Rox. Casey Williams hit a shot, his first of the summer season. Holliday and Brandon Eberle had two hits each. Sto-Rox's Pat Ringel also had two hits including a triple. Ringel also got the complete game win on the mound.

NOTES : Moon has off Saturday as well as the rest of the ORL due to the Region 6 All-Star game at CCAC-Boyce Campus Field. Moon returns to the field and on the road again Sunday (June 19) when they travel to Wellsburg, WVA for an afternoon exhibition doubleheader at Brooke High School Field. The first game is slated for 1 PM. They will return to ORL action on Tuesday night when they host Elliott at 6 PM.

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP 13, MOON TOWNSHIP 5 - LOSS - LEAGUE - AWAY - Wednesday June 15 - (0-1)

It has been one week since Moon lost in PIAA Class AAA playoffs, 11-1. Last night, the Moon Legion decided to have flashbacks. Moon gave up nine runs in the third inning as Robinson Township rolled the Moon, 13-5. Mike Burgunder started for the Moon and took the loss. He never made it out of Moon's error filled third. Tom DeAngelis led Moons offense with 2 hits including a double. Glenn Davis got the win, working only three innings.

Moon returns to action on Friday June 17 against Sto-Rox at SKR's Ewing Road Field. Sto-Rox is 7-1 and running rough shot over the Ohio River League at present. Today (Thursday) Moon sends three players, Jeremy Barchie (3B), Spencer Seigle (C), and Ben Sorosky (P) to the ORL vs. Beaver County League All Star game at CCAC-Boyce Field in Monroeville.

The Moon Township American Legion's 2005 debut was delayed Tuesday when stormy weather from the remnants of Arlene blew through town. They were to host Keystone Oaks Assoc. The game however was postponed and to rescheduled later. Meanwhile, weather permitting, Moon will travel to Burkett Field on Wednesday (tonight) to meet Robinson Township in a game under the lights at 8:00 PM. Manager Glenn Vietmeier's boys are 3-4.

The K.O.A. game has been rescheduled. It will be played on July 6th at Duquesne Field at 6 PM.

The Moon Twp. roster has many of the boys that played with the 2005 Moon Area High School Baseball varsity team that brought home the silver medals from this years' WPIAL Class AAA tournament. There are a few missing and there are a few new faces from Moon Twp. students that attended O.L.S.H. and Sewickley Academy, but have come up in our community baseball association.

I look forward to a very tough season, our schedule is going to be a bit grueling as we try to make up games that were postponed from May and early June. Please note we do have four (4) doubleheaders. One each with North Allegheny, Old Allegheny, and Keystone Oaks. We also have an exhibition doubleheader with Wellsburg, WVa.. The Ohio River League will also be a tough league as always. At this time I wish the boys good luck a great time this summer. Take care and God Bless !!!!

Well, I guess this site will now start picking up where the High School site left off. The Moon Area H.S. baseball team was eliminated from the PIAA Class AAA playoffs yesterday when they were trounced by Peters Township. My best wishes and congratulations to the players and coaching staff of the team for such an outstanding season. Varsity Head Coach Dom Santeufemio did an outstanding job in his first year in the position. I look forward to seeing the varsity and junior varsity players that now join the Legion team. I wish them good luck in thier new season. There is a lot of catching up to do. I am sure that new Legion Manager Dave Barchie will get the troops organized for the campaign. As for the high school players that will not be playing legion this summer, either good luck on your colt teams or whatever endeavors you will be doing this summer.

The Moon Township American Legion team has a new manager. His name is Dave Barchie. He replaces Mark Thompson who resigned the post last year. Ken Sofranko and Frank Sorosky will be his assistants.

The Moon Township coaching staff announced the Moon Township Legion players that qualified for the Ohio River League All Star team that will be playing Beaver County League All Star on Thursday June 16th at 12:30 PM at CCAC Boyce Campus Field. They are :

JEREMY BARCHIE (3B)

SPENCER SEIGLE (C)

BEN SOROSKY (P)
