Just back from our quiet week's vacation to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee with Kelley's cousins. I just wanted to pass on my condolences and sympathies to the family of Dave "Rocky" Collavo who passed away last week (October 9th) after a long battle with cancer. Rocky was 57 years old and a dear friend of mine, Bill Henefeld's nephew, and Moon Township American Legion Baseball. Rocky was an Legion umpire who put baseball and kids high on his list of priorities. I just want to pay my respects to his wife, Maryellen, and his children, Erin, Matthew, and Casey and to his brother, Micheal and sister, Susan and the extended Collavo family. May God Bless him and his family.

Alleg. Co/ PA.Region 6 : Official news, scores, and schedules from Allegheny County and PA State Region 6 American Legion Baseball playoffs

Good Day everyone !!!! The 2006 Moon Township American Legion baseball season has ended. West Allegheny played West View/Ross this evening at North Hills H.S. and won 11-0 to claim one of the three playoffs spots up for grabs coming into Thursday, the last regular season day. Because both WA's and Moon's fields were unplayable the game will not be made up. The Allegheny County Double Elimination playoffs pairing meeting takes place tonight (Friday). The A.C. Playoffs begin on Saturday

Elliott (17-5, 34 points) has clinched the Ohio River League title for the second year in a row. Thus locking up one of the playoff spots in the ORL. They did lose to Old Allegheny, 6-4. West Allegheny and Sewickley both tied for third place with 15-6 (30 points each) marks. The wins by both these teams tonight locked up the final playoff spots. Robinson finished in second place, by beating KOA on Thursday night, 7-2. They owned the tie breakers against WA and Sewickley, however, they also completed thier season which is important with the director.

Old Allegheny (13-8, 26 points) finished fifth and was eliminated when WA won tonight.

I just read a great article that was in last Thursday's Pittsburgh Post Gazette's West Edition. The article written by David Assad was an interview with Moon Township Legion Manager Frank Sorosky on the team. Here is the link :

Pittsburgh Post Gazette:Article written by David Assad based on interview with Frank Sorosky

------------------------------------------------

The season with come to a close this evening (Wednesday),weather permitting, when Moon travels to West Allegheny's Donaldson Field for a 6:00 PM make up game. Ben Sorosky will tentatively make the start for Moon. I know it has been a tough season for our boys. Some coming straight off off the high school varity team's extended season and then straight here without much of a break. Plus throw in the field conditions they had to endure by playing on the hapless Lower "Dust Bowl" Field. It wasn't easy ! I commend those of you that hung in there for Manager Frank Sorosky and his coaches, Dave Barchie and Ken Sofranko. The Ohio River League is a tough league to play. Always some great teams and players to go up against. Good luck on Wednesday night, let's go out with a win !!!

Sorry for the late update of Sunday's game and daily notes. Apparently, I was having some issues with my website's server, which, I just managed to straighten out early this morning. As for our boys, they suffered another loss. This time they dropped another game to Keystone Oaks, 9-2. Moon had five errors, some of which led to a 3-0 lead that KOA would never relinquish, nor Moon ever come back from.

A quick note to our loyal and steady readers of this page. Unfortunately I do not know for sure that I will be able to update this page with information on the Allegheny County playoffs which I had usually been doing for quite a few years. I apologize for this but I am not sure i still have my contact point. If by some chance i do re-establish it, I will continue to post here. Thank you so sincerely for your patronage of our website in the past.

SUNDAY JULY 9th - KEYSTONE OAKS ..... 9 - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 2 (AWAY)

Moon spotted KOA three unearned runs and could not recover as they lost 9-2. Dave Compo had two doubles and starting pitcher Jordan Giralico had a two-run double with two outs in the seventh inning to break up the KOA shutout attempt. Luke Brocks, pitched the last inning for Moon and struck out the side. This may have been his last mound performance in a Moon legion uniform - GREAT JOB LUKE !!!!

Good Sunday morning !!! The Moon Township American Legion Baseball (7-13) team managed to earn a split in Saturday's doubleheader. In the opening game at Moon, they were edged by first place, Elliott (14-3), 2-0. Pitchers Jeremy Barchie and Matt Schwartzmiller locked horns in this duel. Elliott would manage to score a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to win their 14th game. In the nitecap, at North Hills, Moon managed to put an end to the five game losing streak with a 14-3 win over West View/Ross.

Moon travels today (Sunday) to GreenTree's Duquesne University Field for a game against Keystone Oaks Association. This will be there ninth game in eight days. Good Luck Boys !!!!

SATURDAY JULY 8th - ELLIOTT ..... 2 - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 0 (HOME)(1st Game)

The boys played an outstanding game against first place Elliott but came out on the short end of the 2-0 score. Jeremy Barchie pitched a strong and solid complete game. He didn't allow any earned runs while striking out nine. However, his mound opponent Matt Schwartzmiller was equal to the task. He limited Moon batters to only three hits as he K'ed twelve and walked three.

Barchie's greatest display on the mound came in the first inning, when after an infield single and two infield errors allowed the bases to be loaded. He reached back for all he had and managed to strike out the next three batters in a row, the 4-5-6 men in their lineup, LOOKING !!! Moon Twp. Manager Frank Sorosky had only three words to descibe it, "It was AWESOME".

THURSDAY JULY 6th - OLD ALLEGHENY ..... 4 - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 0 (HOME)

Moon Township faced Old Allegheny's ace, Matt Meeder again. Though he did not have his "A-Game" on, but his "B-Game" was just as effective as he shutout Moon, 4-0. Meeder pitched out of many tough situations, scattering five hits and stranding ten Moon baserunners. Moon's toughest inning saw Meeder get out of a bases-loaded, no out situation in the third. Ben Smith pitched a solid game, pitching seven innings and only allowing one earned run.

Kenny Sofranko and Jordan Giralico each had two hits. Moon's next games are on Saturday when they host Elliott at 11:00 AM. Jeremy Barchie will tenatively start this one. Then they travel to North Hills H.S. to meet West View/Ross at 3:00 PM. Eric Chimenti is scheduled to start.

The Moon Legion went head to head with the hottest team in the ORL on Monday only to come away empty handed. Moon dropped two games to West Allegheny and watched their playoff chances get a little dimmer. In the opener, Moon held a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but watched as WA score a run in that inning to tie the game. Then score one in the eighth to win it in extra innings. In the nightcap, they trailed 2-0 going into the fifth inning, when the bottom fell out and WA would score nine runs without making an out. Moon would not recover from that and the heat and humidity would end dropping the game and doubleheader, 11-1 in five innings via the 10 run rule.

Moon returns to action on Wednesday against Robinson. Luke Brocks tenatively will get the start. On Thursday, Moon hosts Old Allegheny and will start Ben Smith.

MONDAY JULY 3rd - WEST ALLEGHENY ..... 4 - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 3* (1st Game) (Away at Donaldson Field) (* - 8 innings)

Through four innings Moon and WA had a great game going. But the heat and humidity caught up with Moon in the top of the fifth. WA scored nine runs before Moon pitching could record an out. Four singles, four walks, two hit batters and an error added up to the disasterous inning. Luke Brocks, Moon's third pitcher of the inning, came in to finally put out the fire. But the damage was already done.

The Fourth Of July fireworks started a bit early in Moon Township on Friday night. Moon's offense exploded for 14 hits as they quieted a red hot KOA team, 11-1 in the Dust Bowl. The game ended in the sixth inning via the 10 run-rule. Jeremy Barchie dominated the KOA bats allowing only two hits and the only run he gave up was in the first inning. Moon used two lightning to score eight of thier 11 runs. Brett Hogle had two hits, scored three runs and drove in three to lead the fireworks for Moon's offense. Moon also had six extra base hits.

Moon is now 1-0 to start the second half of their season. They travel to Crafton this morning for a doubleheader. They were tentatively going to send Eric Chimenti and Jordan Giralico to the mound.

THURSDAY JUNE 29th - STO-ROX ..... 5 - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 2 - (Away)

It would be an exciting game this Thursday night at SKR's Ewing Field, but our Moon Township Legion team came out on the losing side of the ledger again by a score of 5-2. Moon only trailed Sto-Rox, 1-0 after six full innings. In the Moon seventh, Dan Pitaro would get the first and only walk issued by S-R starting pitcher, Bibbo to lead off the inning. Spencer Seigle followed with a beautiful bunted single and all at once Moon was in business. Jeremie Barchie than sacrificed the runners to second and third. Ben Smith then singles to drive in both runners and Moon now had a 2-1 lead. Subsequently, Moon would load the bases in the seventh looking for some more insurance runs but a double play would wipe out that.

In the Sto-Rox seventh, P.T. Mihalyi started the S-R last offensive with a single just by our diving shortstop. Two outstanding plays by Barchie at third, and Moon looked as if they were going to win this one. However, the next batter hit a check-swing single to right to score the runner from second and tied the game. Sorosky then intentionally walked S-R's no. 4 batter, Eric Boylan to face Marencel. Marencel would make Sorosky pay for that move by hitting his fastball over the left field fence for a three run walkoff home run.

Moon Township dropped to 3-8 in the ORL as their first half of the season concludes. Jeremy Barchie will pitch tonight in an effort to right the slumping Moon Legion team and try and get back in the hunt for an ORL playoff spot.

The Moon Township Legion scored six runs in the first inning and looked to be on its way to big win. However, with pitching staff depleted. KOA would score 12 runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings to wipe that idea right out of their thoughts. Kenny Sofranko had stellar performance at the plate. He was on base all five at-bats including three sigles, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Sofranko also scored three runs and had an RBI.

Ben Sorosky was the dominating factor in this game. His pitching performance was awesome. He went the distance, limiting S-R bats to two hits, while striking out nine. He also added a pair of hits. Spencer Seigle, his battery mate, drove in three of the six runs for Moon. Eric Chimenti and Dave Compo also added two hits each.

Bad weather ripped through through the old neighborhood and had blacked out a good portion of Moon Township last night. So the home game with Sto-Rox was postponed and will be made up as a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 3:00 PM.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 21st - ROBINSON TOWNSHIP ..... 10 -MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 0 (AWAY)

A very disappointing loss last night as Moon Township got 10 runned by Robinson Township in six innings, 10-0. MONDAY JUNE 19th - ELLIOTT ..... 9 -MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 1 (AWAY)

Elliott and their pitching ace Anthony Trappuzano put on a clinic to show why they were unbeaten in the ORL. Elliott trounced Moon, 9-1 at Herschel Field on Monday night. Trappuzano pretty much singled handedly dominated Moon as he pitched a three hitter, while striking out eight in the complete game win He also had three hits offensively including a grand slam home run.

Moon's defense got off to a shaky start. Ben Sorosky, who started the game and took the loss, only went 4 innings. Moon Township split a Father's Day doubleheader with the ORL's newest entry Sewickley. In the opener they won 2-1, in the nightcap, they went down 8-6.

In game 1, it became a great pitcher's duel between QV's Sean Garrison and our own, Jeremy Barchie. Barchie, after allowing a run in the first inning, settled down. Garrison on the other hand was dominant until the bottom of the sixth when after striking out the lead off batter, he hit a batter and walked the next two batter. SUMDAY JUNE 18th - SEWICKLEY ..... 8 - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 6 (GAME No. 2) (AWAY)

In the nightcap, it was a tale of two different games. What the first game lacked was offense. The second game provided that. Both teams combined for 20 hits.

After taking a 3-0 lead in the early part of the game. Moon watched as Sewickley come back and after four innings had a comfy 8-3 lead. But in Moon's last at bat, the offense arose again. Corey Gracey singled to open the last frame. Ben Sorosky walked. Ryan Orlovsky, with great hustle reached on an error to load the bases. Ben Smith then hit a shot to deep center that ended up getting caught. It was real close to breaking open the rally. However it ended being a SAC fly. Jeremy Barchie followed with a two run single, but two hard line drive outs to Sewickley infielders ended the contest and sent Moon home with the split.

Moon is set to travel to Elliott today (Monday). Elliott is unbeaten and currently the top dog in the ORL. Ben Sorosky is likely to get the nod in this contest weather permitting.

SATURDAY JUNE 17th - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 9 - WEST VIEW/ROSS ..... 4 (HOME)

Jordan Giralico, made his first Moon Legion game a memorable one. He pitched five good innings to help the Moon Township Legion team to a 9-4 victory over West View/Ross. It was also the team's first game at at home in the "Dust Bowl". Moon improved to 1-2 and WV/R fell to 1-5.

Dave Compo's 2 run triple in the first inning gave Moon a lead that they would not relinquish. Eric Chimenti,Brett Hogle, and Corey Gracey each added a double.

Moon travels to Sewickley's Hawthorne Acres today (Sunday) to play a doubleheader with the ORL's newest entry. The first game is to start at 3:00 PM. Be careful, last time I went to this field I got lost. The entrance way is a bit easy to miss.

FRIDAY JUNE 16th - OLD ALLEGHENY ..... 9 - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 2 (AWAY)

With five key players missing, Moon Legion Manager Frank Sorosky was forced to play many players out of position. In fact it may have spoiled an outstanding pitching performance from Eric Chimenti. Old Allegheny scord score four unearned runs over the first three innings. This, coupled with another fine pitching performance by Old A's Matt Meeder that handcuffed Moon hitting after a shaky start. Meeder struck out seven and didn't walk anyone. Meeder is considered one of the best pitchers this year in the ORL.

Moon did however have some highlights to talk about. Brandon Eberle hit a two-run home run over the "Silver Monster" in left field at Springview Field. Brett Hogle made an outstanding catch in the right-centerfield gap, worthy of an ESPN top ten play. It staved off an early rally by Old A. Chimenti had a "sweet" pickoff at first base with the help of 1B Eberle.

Moon looks forward to heading "home" to the Dust Bowl" on Saturday morning with a game against West View/Ross. Moon's Jordan Giralico will get the nod on the hill for Mgr. Sorosky. Good Luck Moon !!!!!

MOON TOWNSHIP - 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 = 2 - 8 - 3

HR's : Brandon Eberle (MOON), Meeder (OA). Two or more hits : Eric Chimenti (MOON), Brett Hogle (MOON), Meeder (OA) 3, Grabowski (OA) 3, Hughes (OA).

THURSDAY JUNE 15th - ROBINSON TOWNSHIP ..... 5 - MOON TOWNSHIP ..... 2 (AWAY)

Manager Frank Sorosky took the helm for the first time, but Moon Township (0-1) got off to the auspicious start in it's delayed season opener on Thursday night at Burkett Field. The boys lost 5-2 to Robinson Twp. under the lights. Robinson's Frank Marko scattered seven hits in his six innings of work. Ben Sorosky took the loss despite giving up only five hits. Moon's Eric Chimenti had a pair of hits including a double. Jim Teyssier added two hits for Coach Glen Vietmeier's squad.

Moon begins the long process of getting themselves caught up schedule wise. Tonight they travel to Old Allegheny. On Saturday morning they play their home opener at 11 AM against West View-Ross. On Sunday, they play a doubleheader against ORL's newest entry, Sewickley beginning at 3 PM.

MOON TOWNSHIP - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 = 2 - 8 - 1

Hi everybody, again I apologize for no new news on this site. The Moon Area H.S. baseball team continues their post-season adventures, now, in the PIAA State playoffs. I do have some news though. I was talking to Moon Mgr. Frank Sorosky the other day and they have revised the schedule. He also informed me that two players from Moon Legion qualified for the Ohio River League All-Stars and moved on to the second round of the American Legion All-Stars workouts.

Jeremie Barchie qualified for his second time, this year as a pitcher. Jeremie pitched for MERCYHURST NORTHEAST this past spring.

Brandon Eberle of Our Lady of Sacred Heart turned in some outstanding fielding skills at third base and will also represent Moon Twp. Legion in the second round.

I will be posting the schedule and roster hopefully soon. I am heading to PGH this coming weekend for my parents 50th wedding anniversary and to attend the funeral of my father's sister, my beloved Aunt Josephine. Unfortunately, I doubt I will get to see anyone due to be tied up with family matters.

Keep checking back here, I promise something new soon !!!!

The 2006 Moon Township American Legion team homepage is getting ready to update and roll out the new season. Moon Legion has another new manager in Frank Sorosky. Him and Dave Barchie will change roles for this season. I have recieved all the legion information and should be updating this page very soon. However, I am still in full stride with the Moon Area H.S. Baseball website currently. Hope you can come back here soon !!! Take care and God Bless you all till then.

The Official History of MOON TOWNSHIP American Legion Baseball

by Joe Marek and the late Lynn Baker

The Moon Township American Legion Program began in 1964, when the newly founded Moon Twp. Baseball Association began looking for a way for the older kids to continue to play. Moon had a Legion program until 1969, when lack of interest folded the program. For the next several years Moon Kids were forced to play baseball in neighboring Robinson Township.

In 1978, the late Lynn Baker, who was very instrumental in the success of the MBA, decided to ressurrect the Legion program at Moon. Lynn was tired of seeing our players treated as second hand citizens at Robinson. Lynn sought and was granted a franchise and was backed and financially supported by the MBA. Ray Bosetti coached the first year of the program. Jack Rodgers took the program in 1979. Lynn decided to try his hand with managing the program, along with late Ray Walker, Jim Liska, Joe Farquhar and Joe Marek, coached from 1980 to 1982. Gene Vetovich and Mike Hughes coached the boys in 1983 and 1984. Andy Kortyna took over the team in 1985.

Fred Taylor became the manager of the program in 1986 and 1987. Fred's coaching staff in those years included Jim Miara, Bill Henefeld, and Joe Marek. In 1988, Fred decided to give the program to former Little Pirate Head Coach George Schmidt. 1988 became a dark year for the franchise, Schmidt would run into problems and almost folded the team midway through the season. Enter Bill Henefeld who was released by Taylor when he gave the team to Schmidt. Along with Lou Baniecki, George and Bill got team back on it's feet and finished the season.

In 1989, Bill Henefeld was given the Legion program for his efforts in saving the program. Along with Lou Baniecki and re-recruited Joe Marek, the Moon Township Legion program began a new era. Also in 1989, West Allegheny folded their franchise, which left WA kids without a place to play. The Allegheny County American Legion rezoned Moon's area and awarded the WA players to Moon. This would in years to come be a blessing. Moon was starting to experience a player shortage. With WA, the team would survive. In 1992, Rick Stetzer joined the team as pitching coach. From 1989 to 1995, Henefeld managed the program to great success. In 1995, following a disappointing fifth place finish and the death of Lynn Baker, Henefeld's mentor and the program's and team's dearest friend. Bill decided to hang up the reins of the program. One of Bill's previous assistants, Dom Santeufemio, was named as his replacement. Along with long time assistant Legion coach Joe Marek, the Moon Legion Program continued to strive and be successful.

During, Henefeld's tenure as manager, he had a tremendous support from some outstanding short term assistant coaches which included, Tony Rea (1990-91), Thomas Bayly (1991-92), Joe Nestor (1993), and the late George W. Thomas, Jr. (1994-1995). In 1996 and 1997, Dom and Joe pretty much keep the team flowing on the same strong keel that Henefeld had. With the help of business manager Rich Krane and pitching coach, Jason Melynchek. Moon continued it's playoff run.

In 1998, Dom brought in Tom Hoffman as an assistant coach. In 1999, Santeufemio stepped down from the manager's job and along with Joe Marek retired. On recommendation from Santeufemio, Marek, and Legion Commissioner Rich Krane, Tom Hoffman was named as the new manager. On March 4th, 1999, Legion Commissioner and Business Manager Rich Krane died leaving a very devastating loss to both the association and the Legion. Both Santeufemio and Marek returned to the team as assistants to Tom, as one of Rich's last requests. In March, Bill Kelley, was named Legion Commissioner.

In April, Hoffman and Marek both nominated Santeufemio as Business Manager at a Legion Meeting. The Summer Of 1999, would be a special one, Moon Twp. for the first time in its history advanced out of the County playoffs and into the Region 6 playoffs. They then proceeded to win their first Pa. State Region 6 title and end up in St.Marys, PA for the Pa. State ALB Championship Tournament. In 2000, Moon returned to win the ORL, but lost quickly in the County playoffs due to being undermanned when more than half their starters took off to Florida to play in a AAU tournament. The results were ugly as Moon, who was the favorite to win the Region and the state went two and out. Long time assistant coach, Joe Marek, officially retired to pursue a new life of being married and moving to Philly.

Also, following the 2000 season, Hoffman resigned as manager to focus on the Moon Area H.S. Baseball program and his son's little league tournament team. Along with him, Dom Santeufemio also retired. In February, 2001, Mark Thompson is named as the new A.L. manager, thus the beginning of another era of Moon Legion Baseball. Moon finishes fourth in the ORL, but qualify for the Allegheny County A.L. Dbl. Elimination Tournament in 2001.

Moon Legion again making another run at a coveted Region 6 berth. They open the 2002 Allegheny County A.L. Dbl.-Elim. tourney with a loss to Plum. But had managed to reel off 4 wins in a row in the loser's bracket to advance to the Loser's bracket Championship game against Shaler. Moon lost to Shaler, 7-0, and finished fourth in Allegheny County with 19-6-1 record.

In February 2003, Mark Thompson relinquished the manager's position. In March, Mark Daddi, an assistant varsity coach on the Moon H.S. team to Tom Hoffman, is named to replace Thompson. Moon Legion Baseball continues on. However, after suffering through injuries and defections, the 2003 team finished with it's worst season ever. In 2004, despite qualifying for the playoffs under Mark Thompson. The team had problems with player numbers and even were placed under probation.

In 2005, Dave Barchie takes the helm as manager with Ken Sofranko and Frank Sorosky as his coaches. In 2006, Frank and Dave change roles. We look to the future and hope they will provide the leadership and dedication this program needs. In 2006, Frank Sorosky guided the team to a 7-14 campaign and may be retiring. I wish Frank nothing but the best in his future decision. !!!

It saddens me to find out only recently a dear friend of mine that coached the Crafton-Ingram-Thornburg American Legion team for many years back in the late 80's and early 90's passed away last September 11, 2005. His name was Ray Marshall. Bill Henefeld and me used to refer to him as Field Marshall. Ray was a super guy. In his latter years, he had actually been named as a League Director for the Ohio River League. Ray died of cancer. I will never forget him and his assistant coach and drinking buddy, "DOC".

Another friend of American Legion Baseball was John Bartok. John was an umpire and later the Allegheny County American Legion Chairman. God Bless both these men and the service to the American Legion Baseball program.
