THE 2008 ALLEG. CO./REGION 6/PA. ALB Tournaments ARCHIVED Homepage

Hello everyone! It deeply saddens me to announce the passing of a great man, a good friend, and mentor to me over the past thirty years. Region 6 Director, Bob Hester has passed away at the age of 68 on Monday April 13th. Our condolences to Bob's wife Cathy and his sons, Robert G., Thomas, Dennis, and Donald and their families.

Bob took over the reins of the Region 6 director's position in the early 1980's and was a strong leader and advocate of the program ever since. It was only this past summer when he announced he was stepping down from the position due to poor health. Region 6 American Legion Baseball will not be the same without his leadership, wisdom and understanding. The ALB program has lost a dear friend. May God Bless you Bob and your family. You are in our prayers and will never forgotten my friend

Those wanting to pay their respects will be received at the WALTER J. ZALEWSKI FUNERAL HOME at 216 4th Street in Lawrenceville. Viewing will be held on Tuesday from 7 PM -9 PM, Wednesday 2 PM -4 PM and 7 PM - 9 PM. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Joseph Church on Thursday at 1 PM.

Some other sad news, Legion baseball not only has lost a good friend, but apparently the recession and bad times have led to the demise of several outstanding American Legion franchises. I have been notified that Robinson Twp., Sto-Ken-Rox, and West View/Ross have all apparently folded their programs for this year. This leaves a lot of boys without a place to play baseball. This truly saddens me. Baseball is a rite of summer and when you take away that from our youth, you diminish their futures. I can only hope and pray that things will improve and we will see the return of these programs in the near future.

Hello everyone! I was not planning on daily updates but, I will give it a try. In the Mid-Atlantic American Legion Baseball National Regional in Colonial Heights, VA., Boyertown survived opening day jitters and came from behind to beat Maryland State ALB Champ, Gaithersburg Post 295 (39-4), 11-10. Bear Ace, Shayne Houck got knocked around and left the game in after Gaithersburg took a 7-3 lead on a three-run blast by No. 9 hitter Gary Schneider in the bottom of the third inning. Nate Schnell would relieve him and would end up becoming the winner pitcher when the Bears took the lead for good in the top of the ninth inning. Boyertown (54-1) will play host Colonial Heights, a 12-11 winner over Newark, DE. on Thursday night, tonight in a 7:30 p.m. winners-bracket semifinal.

In the Great lakes ALB National Regional tournament in Chillicothe, OH., PA. State ALB Runner-up, Bradford (29-11) defeated host Chillicothe Post 757 (19-21), 7-3 in the nightcap. Bradford pitcher, Brandon Slater went the entire nine innings, striking out 12 to get the win. Bradford only had six hits, but took advantage of three Chillicote pitchers that issued 11 walks. Chillicothe outhit Bradford, 12-6. Bradford will now play Michigan ALB State Champion, Midland Post 165 (51-10). Midland, a perrenial Legion power was an 8-6 winner over Eden Prairie Post 509 (44-11) on Thursday night.

Region 8 champ, Bradford (27-10) knocked Region 6 Champion, Plum (33-7) out of the PA. ALB tournament early this evening, 12-9. Bradford will now play Boyertown at 12:30 PM for a shot at the title. However, they would have to beat the Bears twice to claim it. Boyertown remains unbeaten after coming back to eliminate NorChester, 12-9 on Friday evening. Bradford, however, with NorChester losing, has claimed one of the two berths Pennsylvania recieves to the National Regionals. If Bradford beats Boyertown in the first game, they will play them again about a 1/2 hour later.

With the win, the Bears earned one of the two National Regionals spots alloted to Pennsylvania. Good day! The Blackhawk Americaan Legion Baseball team has been playing the gracious host for the 2008 Pa. Region 6 ALB Tournament for the past five days at Chippewa Park Field. So gracious that they decided to extend it another day. With the help of their bats and Mother Nature, Blackhawk finds themselves playing Plum again today (Thursday) for the Region 6 title. Coach Bob Amalia's boys pounded Plum on Wednesday afternoon, 15-4, in 8 innings to force another game. That game had been scheduled to be played right after the first game yesterday but rain ended that idea. Both teams will line up again today at 4:00 PM to resolve the matter of who will go to the PA. State ALB Tournament in Boyertown. You can read more about the game at the link below :

Blackhawk edged Hopewell in the last of the 10th inning of Tuesday's Loser's bracket, 10-9. Blackhawk had an early 7-0 lead in this contest. But Hopewell cut the lead to 7-2 on a two-run homer by Max Vogel and then scored seven runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-7 lead. Blackhawk inched its way back to tie the game at 9-9 on a Ryan Verlihay two-run homer. It would be a sacrifice fly by T.J. Lambert to score Austin Wulf in the 10th inning. Blackhawk will meet Plum on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Plum eliminated Uniontown, 13-8 in the late game. Plum is still unbeaten in this double-elimination tournament, for Blackhawk to win the title, they will have to play and beat Plum twice. For Hopewell, it ends a great season. Congratulations to all the teams that made it this far.

In a Fayette County ALB Best-Of-Five Championship note, Uniontown and Charleroi will apparently play the fifth and deciding game on Thursday at Hopwood's Hutchinson Field at 6:00 PM.

The Uniontown/Charleroi BEST-OF-FIVE Fayette County Championship Series is tied at 2-2 and may (or may not) ever be decided. Fayette County ALB officials have suspended the series indefinitely due to the upcoming PA. Region 6 ALB Tournament. Officials say they might resume it after the Regional playoffs are over. Fayette County ALB rules state that the regular season champion is the league's No.1 seed in the regional. Uniontown won the league and will be going to the Region 6 tournament as Fayette Co. #1, Chaleroi as Fayette Co. #2. Both teams will start play on Saturday at Blackhawk's Chippewa Park Field and Geneva College Field.

Good day! Last night's action cleared up a lot of questions. The first question posed, who was going to win the Beaver County ALB Championship. The answer would be Hopewell, with a big 6-0 win over Blackhawk to capture their 13th Beaver Co. League title since 1980.

The next question answered would be : Who were going to be the last wo spots from Allegheny County going to be? The final two Allegheny Co. berths were resolved when Chartiers Valley/South Fayette beat Mt. Washington, 8-2 and Peters Twp. hammered Baldwin, 14-7. Both teams advance as the No.3 and No.4 seeds.

Only one question remains now, since both Fayette County teams in the Championship Series qualify : Who will be the Fayette County champion and No.1 seed to represent them. If Mother Nature cooperates, we will have that answer on Wednesday night (TONIGHT). The fifth and decisive game of that BEST-OF-SERIES will be determined at Hopwood's Hutchinson Field at 6:00 PM.

In the Fayette County playoffs on Friday night, Charleroi fired back in a big way to continue their battle for the Fayette County Championship. Charleroi pounded Uniontown 15-5 to tie up the best-of-five series at 1-1. Game three of the series, on Monday night, saw Uniontown beat Charleroi, 4-1, to take a 2-1 advantage in the series.

On Tuesday, the series returned to Charleroi and saw the home team win the game 7-5. With the game tied at 5-5, Charleroi scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when with two runners on, a pop fly to right field led to a collision between UT's second baseman and right fielder. The collision resulted in the ball being dropped, and the runs scoring. Apparently, while the two teams waited for an ambulance for a 1/2 hour, darkness was setting in and when play was ready to resume, the umpires and officials decided it was too dark too play and since the game was in the eighth inning it was a legal contest and awrded the win to Charleroi. On Wednesday, heavy rains postponed the series indefinitely. Read the story on game five below.

On Thursday July 31st, Uniontown and Charleroi managed to complete their Fayette County ALB Championship Best-Of-Five series at Hopwood's Hutchinson Field. With the series tied a 2-2, weather killed the first attempt to get the game in. That combined with the Pa. Region 6 ALB tournament starting in two days, the Fayette County ALB officials decided to postpone the series indefinitely. On Thursday, Uniontown beat Charleroi, 13-9 to win the series, 3 games to 2. The first link below has the story from the Uniontown Herald-Standard :
