Good morning, sorry for the delay, internet connection problems abound at home. Yesterday, saw nearly all the western side of the state bow out of the tournament. Blackhawk was eliminated by Nor-Gwyn, 11-4. Millcreek, a team from northwestern PA near Erie, was taken out by Punxsutawney, 8-7. Both games were in the loser's bracket. In the winner's bracket, Hummelstown kept hummin' along by beating NorChester, 6-1. Host and Region 2 Champion, Boyertown, were trailing after seven innings, 4-3. But five Plains miscues in the eighth inning gave the Bears all the runs they needed to win. They advance with an 11-4 victory. Bears starter Garret Crable (9-0) went the full nine innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out seven. Offensively, for the Bears were Mike Schwager (2-4, 3 runs, RBI), Brent Ruminski (2-5, 4 RBIs), Alex Neiman (2-4, 2 runs) and Thorpe (2-5).

Blackhawk's trip to the 2006 PA State ALB tournament came to a short and abrupt ending. They got whisked out the tourney by the defending 2005 PA State Champions, Nor-Gwyn (Region 2 Runners-up), 11-4. The game was close for the most part, but Blackhawk was always on the short end of the score. After going 26 games without a loss, Blackhawk lost 3 out of the last four games. Adam Liberatore started on the mound and ended up with the loss. Nor-Gwyn (35-9-1) scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to break open a 6-4 game. N-G's Brendon Fanslau was 2-6 with a double, 4 RBI's and scored twice. Haw's Matt Quinn (6-1) went 8 2/3 innings, allowing 13 hits. Brian Brognano was 3-for-4 and drove in a run, and losing pitcher Liberatore was 2-5 with a pair of doubles and had two runs for Blackhawk.

Jimmy Miller and David Nipple combined on a four-hitter, and Doug Bream and Barry Weistling each went 3-5 to lead an 11-hit attack as Hummelstown defeated Norchester 6-1 in a winners bracket game. Miller worked seven inning, giving up three hits and an unearned run, and Nipple threw two scoreless innings of relief for Hummelstown (30-1-1), the Region 4 champion. Bream had a double, scored a run and an RBI. Steve Lerch (10-1) took his first loss of the season for the Region 3 champs (30-8).

Behind 6-5 going into the ninth, Region 7 champ, Punxsutawney scored three times in the top of the inning, then held off a Millcreek rally to eliminate the Region 8 champs. Dustin Dubensky went 2-4 with a (2B, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Nick Gillung (2 DOUB), Chad Oberacker was 2-5 (DOUB, 2 runs, RBI)all had two hits for Millcreek. Punxsutawney improved to 23-6 and Millcreek finished 23-10.

It was a very hot day in Boyertown and today will probably be a lot worse. In game one, (and a game I was at and almost melted) NorChester's Adam Hartzell, shut down Blackhawk, 11-0 in seven innings via the mercy rule. The righty gave up only two hits, walked none, and struck out six. Mathias Bable started for Blackhawk and lasted only 6+ innings. He started the seventh inning, but hit the first four batters. They brought in a reliever and he walked one and hit one too. NorChester (Region 3 Champ) plays Hummelstown today at 4:00 PM in the winner's bracket. Blackhawk, losing only it's second game of the year, faces elimination against Region 2 runner-up, Nor-Gwyn, at 9:45 AM.

In game two, Region 5 Champ, Plains, out of Wilkes-Barre, turned Punxsutawney (Region 7 Champ) into road kill, beating them 11-0 in seven innings via the mercy rule. Plains pitcher Chris Sedon made short work of the Chucks, going the distance and striking out nine without allowing a walk. He gave up just three hits in the shutout. Plains advances in the winner's bracket tonight against host, Boyertown at 7:30 PM.

In game three, the day's closest game was played, Region 4 Champ Hummelstown beat Region 2 runnerup, Nor-Gwyn, 3-2. In game four, host Boyertown, got help from Millcreek's defense during a nine-run third, ended up giving back five of those runs in the bottom of the inning, but pulled away for a 27-7 win. Ken Thorpe and Alex Neiman each hit home runs in their 18-hit barrage. Todd Speilman got the win in relief of Matt Kelly, who was chased in the third. The game was ended also on the mercy rule.

Boyertown (38-7) will play the Plains Purple Wave, an 11-0 winner over Punxsutawney, in the second half of today's second doubleheader at around 7 p.m. Millcreek (23-9) will take on Punxsutawney at approximately 12:30

Tournament notes - Temperatures were in the mid to uppers 90's yesterday and are expected to reach 100 today with a heat index near 110 to 115 ..... I never saw a pitcher hit four batters in a row until yesterday. I feel bad for Mathias Bable, the heat and frustration probably made him weary and I think he lost his focus in that dreaded seventh inning. ..... I'm hoping Bob Amalia's boys can bounce back against a strong Nor-Gwyn program. Good luck today !!!!

Welcome to the debut of the Allegheny County & PA Region 6 American Legion website on the internet. With the help of PA. Region 6 Director, Bob Hester, I hope to bring you the latest news regarding American Legion baseball in this area of Western Pennsylvania. This site will carry all county, regional, and state playoff news and scores.

In 2007, I urge and coaches, business managers, legion post commanders, and county directors to feel free to email me with any pertinent information like game scores, league standings, league all-star players, upcoming meetings, fund raisers, teams looking for games, team registrations/sign-ups, links to your team's own websites or what have you. My name is Joe "Mav" Marek and I am a former assistant coach of Moon Area H.S (25 years) and Moon Township American Legion baseball programs. I was with Moon's legion program for almost 20 years and still maintain their and the high school's websites.

Bob Hester had sent me some information regarding past county and Region 6 playoffs. He has given me the scores to most years from 1991 to present. This is just the start of things. Over the next several months I hope to have everything up and running. So please hang with me as I shake out the bugs and update this site.

With your help, I would like this to be one of the best and most informative legion baseball site in the country. In the meantime, below is this years 2006 scores from the Allegheny County, Region 6, and PA State Championship tournaments.

The 2006 PA State Region 6 American Legion Baseball tournament concludes sucessfully at Robinson Township's Burkett Field Complex

Plum gets by Hopewell, 8-5, in the first game on Saturday to advance against Blackhawk for the title.

After being undefeated in 26 games, Blackhawk rallies from 5-1 deficit, one out from elimination in the ninth inning in the Region 6 title game against Plum

The 8-6 win in ten innings advances Amalia's Blackhawk to it's fifth PA State American Legion Championship berth in the past seven years.

The dance is over West Allegheny eliminated by Hopewell, 4-3

Plum beats Blackhawk on Friday to end thier unbeaten season, 9-4.

--------------------------------------

Going into Friday night's game against Plum, Manager Bob Amalia's Blackhawk American Legion team was unbeaten and untied in 26 straight games. They cruised easily to the Beaver County regular season title, then made short work of New Brighton, ABE, and Hopewell in the county playoffs and championship. On Tuesday, they began to pummel their Region 6 with the same zest, Houston, West Allegheny, then Hopewell again .... then came Plum, with one foot in the proverbial grave. They would beat Blackhawk for the first time this year. Something no one else had done this season.

On Saturday afternoon, after dispatching Joe Colella's Hopewell, 8-5, in the first game, Bill Holme's Plum was ready to rumble again against Blackhawk. Plum was riding high in the title game. They had jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the second inning. Then added a pair of runs in the eighth inning to lead, 5-1. In the top of the ninth, Blackhawk, came to life, scoring four times, some with two outs, to tie the game. In the tenth, Blackhawk added 3 more runs to take an 8-5 lead. Plum could only muster one more run in the bottom of the ninth. Blackhawk would win it's fifth regional title in the past seven years and advance to Boyertown next Tuesday for the 2006 PA State American Legion Championship Tournament.

TOURNAMENT NOTES : Hopewell was only one game away from meeting Blackhawk for the sixth time this year when they were beaten by Plum, 8-5 in the first game on Saturday. ..... There is speculation that this may be Hopewell Manager Joe Colella's last season. To those people, I will believe that when I see it. Keep it going Joe, God Bless you !!! ..... West Allegheny's loss on Friday night ended a great run by a team that wasn't given much a chance to win this tourney, let alone be here. WA just managed to qualify for the Allegheny Co. Playoffs pretty much on the last day of the season. Congratulations to Coach Tom O'Connor and WA on the great season. ..... Plum was one out away from advancing to it's first Region 6 berth since 1993 when Blackhawk rallied. My heart goes out to Plum Manager Bill (Homer) Holmes. Take care and God Bless !! ..... Congratulations to all the teams here. You are all champions in our hearts ..... A special commendation to Robinson Township for hosting this year's Region 6 tourney. I send my hello out to Robinson's Glenn Vietmeier and Frank Marko. Though I wasn't able to attend, I heard it was an outstanding and well run tournament. Thanks for bringing the tournament back out to Western Allegheny County. Burkett is an outstanding complex and both you men along with your community have to be proud of the job you have done with it. ..... Hopefully, I'll get to see Blackhawk on Tuesday in Boyertown, I'm going to try and make it north along with my nephews. ..... One last note, this information will be moving to it's own new website on Monday. The New Pa State Region 6/Allegheny County American Legion Baseball Homepage that I promised Region 6 Director Bob Hester last year. Here is the link :

Sorry for the late update. Had trouble getting results due to the lateness of yesterday's games. Plum eliminated Charleroi in seven innings via the 10 run-rule, winning 12-2. West Allegheny got back in the hunt with a big 9-8 win over Bethel Park. The win eliminated Bethel Park and sends WA into a game against Hopewell at 4:00 PM on Friday afternoon. Blackhawk defeated Hopewell to remain unbeaten in this tourney and on the season. I did not get the score due to the lateness of that game.

Plum will play Blackhawk at 7:30 PM this evening. If Blackhawk wins, they eliminate Plum and will meet the winner of the WA/Hopewell game tommorrow for the Region 6 title. If Plum wins, they play the winner of that game (Hope/WA) tommorrow for the right to play Blackhawk again for the Region 6 title. Blackhawk is in command of this tournament.

On Wednesday. Plum defeated Houston, 7-4. The loss sent Allegheny County's No.2 seed Houston home. In the second game, Allegheny County's No. 1 seed Bethel Park eliminated host team, Robinson Twp., 4-3. Robinson outhit BP, 14-6, but had bases loaded in the ninth inning with no outs and didn't score.

In game 3, a winner's bracket game, unbeaten Beaver County No. 1 seed, Blackhawk beat Cinderella West Allegheny, 8-4. Mathias Bable went the distance, striking out 13 batters as Blackhawk pushed its record to 25-0 overall. Derek DiRuscia remained redhot with a two-run double and two RBI singles. He has six hits and seven RBIs in the tournament. Alan Denman added three hits and an RBI, giving him five hits and four RBIs in the tournament. Brian Brognano, who hit a home run in the opener, rattled a run-scoring double off the top of a 10-foot fence in left field.

Hopewell spotted Charleroi an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but rallied to a 4-3 win in the tournament's second day nitecap. Justin Daley got the win for Mgr. Joe Colella's team. He went eight innings but in trouble in the ninth. Scott Dunn, who pitched a complete game on Tuesday, came in to put out the fire. One note in this contest, Hopewell's Mike Seech was ejected from the game for an interference call at home plate and will be ineligible to play in today's game. Seech is one of Hopewell's key pitchers.

Good morning ! The Region 6 tournament has began and what a start it was. In the opening game at Burkett Field Complex in Robinson Township, Undefeated Beaver County Champion, Blackhawk steamrolled Houston, 18-6. Derek DiRuscia had three hits and drove in three runs. Alan Denman and Brian Brognano each hit home runs and drove in three runs. Jason Brognano added three hits, and Tyler Marburger used two hits to drive in three runs.

In the second game of the day, Hopewell (Beaver Co. No.2 seed) edged Bethel Park (Allegheny Co. No.1 seed), 3-2. Scott Dunn tossed a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts. Nate Harmotto had a two-out, two-run single that gave Hopewell the lead.

In the third game, West Allegheny continues to be the Cinderella team like they were in the Allegheny County playoffs and pounded Plum, 12-4. Ricky Devereaux pitched a complete game, and every player in batting order scored at least one run. Jared Littler and Andy Slifko each had three hits. Mike Serventi added two RBI singles. Mark Diskin, Devereaux and Tyler Savisky had two RBI's. Rob Cool and Derek Zeresky both had two singles. This is WA's fifth straight win

I did not get any info on the nitecap, but I do know, Charleroi beat Robinson.

The tournament continues today at 9:30 AM at Burkett. In the opener, Houston plays Plum in a loser's bracket elimination game. At 12:30 PM, Hopewell plays Charleroi in a winner's bracket game. At 4:30 PM, the other winner's brackett game, West Allegheny plays Blackhawk. And in the nitecap, host Robinson Twp. plays Bethel Park in the other loser's bracket elimination game. One note, I noticed the B.C. Times listed the Hopewell-Charleroi game at 7:30 PM, this is probably not the case. According to Legion Region tournament play, the host team plays in the 7:30 PM showcase time slot whether they are in the loser's or winner's bracket. They are the host.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a great tournament to watch and will go all week through Saturday afternoon. This is a small admission fee but is worth price to see this tournament. These are the best teams in southwestern PA and the winner will advance to the PA State American Legion Baseball Championship tournament in Boyertown, PA next week.

It has been a long time since the Region 6 tournament was out here in Western Allegheny County. Moon hosted the 1994 tournament on Moon High School's main and Dust Bowl Fields. and Keystone Oaks hosted the 2000 tournament at Duquesne University Field. So you can see it is almost like every six years it makes its way here.

Good luck to all the teams involved in the tournament. I'm of course rooting for the West Allegheny boys. Last two times Moon was in the Region 6 tournament, we had a good number of West A players on our roster. In 1999, West A's Jason Boyce, Alan Miller and Brett Ozanich helped lead us to the 1999 Region 6 title. A team which I can proudly say was the greatest team I ever had the chance to coach and be associated with. In 1994, Bryan Cornell, the late George Thomas Jr., and Billy Thomas were on hand when we hosted the tournament.
